Thanks to increasingly complex cloud environments, the issue of cost optimization has become vital.
By tapping into the financial operations (FinOps) discipline as its superpower from both a technology and licensing perspective, SoftwareONE AG heightens cloud value through spend optimization, according to Bernd Schlotter (pictured, right), president and member of the executive board at SoftwareONE.
“The FinOps Foundation estimates that about a third of cloud spend is waste, and that’s where FinOps comes in,” Schlotter said. “We can help customers be more efficient in the cloud and lower their cloud spend while doing the same or more.”
Schlotter and Neil Lomax (pictured, left), member of the executive board and president at SoftwareONE, spoke with theCUBE hosts Savannah Peterson and John Furrier at AWS re:Invent, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. A confident cloud is crucial
The FinOps journey should not be treated as an afterthought because it ought to be embedded from the onset, according to Lomax, who said this sets the pace for a confident cloud.
“A confident cloud means you’ll do more with it,” he noted. “If you lose confidence in that bill in how much it’s costing you, you’re going to retract. And so it’s really about making sure all customers know exactly what’s in there, how it’s optimized, restocking, reformatting applications, getting more out of the microservices and getting more value out the cloud, and that will help them tighten that belt.”
As a founding member of the FinOps Foundation, SoftwareONE helps enterprises apply FinOps when migrating to the cloud through different perspectives, from software licensing to infrastructure, according to Schlotter.
“Well, you start with the business case, and you’re not just looking at infrastructure costs like most people do. You ought to look at software licensing costs,” Schlotter said. “For example, if you run SQL on-premise, you have an enterprise agreement. But if you move it to the cloud, you may actually take a different, more favorable licensing agreement and save a lot of money. And these things are hidden. They’re not to be seen, but they need to be part of the business case.”
